Choosing IGCSE subjects is the first decision in your child’s education that genuinely narrows options later. Most families treat it as an administrative form to fill in during Form 3. Two years on, when a university course requires a subject nobody took, it stops looking administrative.
The good news is that the decision is not difficult once you understand what universities actually check, what the subject groups are for, and which combinations quietly close doors. This guide walks through all three.
How do IGCSE subjects work?
IGCSE is taken subject by subject. Students usually enter between six and ten subjects, each examined and graded separately, drawn from broad groups covering languages, sciences, mathematics, humanities and creative or vocational options. There is no fixed compulsory set worldwide, but most schools require English, Mathematics and at least one science.

The subject groups explained
IGCSE subjects are organised into groups so that a student ends up with breadth rather than five versions of the same skill. Schools in Malaysia typically require at least one subject from most groups, then allow free choice for the remainder. The exact rules vary by school, which is why the first question is always to your child’s own school.
Broadly the groups cover languages, humanities and social sciences, sciences, mathematics, and creative or technical subjects. The Cambridge IGCSE programme documentation lists the full subject range and the current syllabus codes.
Two practical points. First, not every school offers every subject, and a subject with only three students may not run at all. Second, some subjects are only offered at one tier, which matters if your child is likely to be borderline.
Ask early: Get the school’s actual subject list for your child’s cohort, not the prospectus version. Options are often narrower in practice than in print.
How many subjects should your child take
Between six and eight is the range that serves most students well. Ten is achievable for an exceptional and well-organised student, and it is frequently a mistake for everyone else, because the marginal subjects are studied at the expense of the ones that matter.
Universities set entry requirements on specific subjects and grades, not on totals. No admissions office has ever preferred nine B grades to seven A grades. What extra subjects buy you is optionality, and optionality is only worth having if it does not cost you grades in the core.

The honest test is workload. Ask your child to map a normal week with the proposed subject list, including school, homework, tuition and rest. If the plan only works on paper, it will not survive February of Form 5.

The three that are effectively compulsory
English, Mathematics and at least one science form the practical floor. Almost every onward pathway checks them, including A-Level, the IB Diploma, local matriculation and foundation programmes, and many employers use them as a baseline long after university.
English carries more weight than families expect. It is frequently the language requirement for admission, and a weak grade can require a separate language test later, adding both cost and delay.
Mathematics is the gateway subject for the widest range of courses, including several that do not look mathematical at first glance, such as Economics, Psychology and some Business programmes.
Separate sciences or Combined Science
This is the decision families most often get wrong, and it is the hardest to reverse. Combined Science covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics in a single qualification. Separate sciences award three distinct grades and go considerably deeper.

Combined Science can be accepted for some courses and rejected for others, and the rules differ by university.
The rule of thumb
If a science career is even possible in two years, take the separate sciences now. Adding them later is far harder than dropping them.
Watch out: Students who switch to separate sciences in Form 5 rarely recover the lost depth. This is a Form 3 decision with Form 6 consequences.
Why Additional Mathematics matters so much
Additional Mathematics is the highest-leverage optional subject on the list. It is the bridge between IGCSE Mathematics and A-Level or IB Higher Level Mathematics, and students who skip it frequently struggle in the first term of pre-university even when their IGCSE Mathematics grade was strong.
It is also the subject where structured support pays off most visibly, because the gap between understanding a topic and being able to execute it under time pressure is wider than in almost any other subject at this level.
If your child is heading towards Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Economics, Actuarial Science or Finance, treat Additional Mathematics as close to compulsory. If they are heading firmly towards humanities, it is a reasonable subject to leave out.
Choosing by target pathway
The cleanest way to decide is backwards, starting from two or three plausible university courses and working back to the IGCSE subjects those courses assume. This takes an evening and removes almost all of the guesswork.
- Pick two or three plausible degree courses, even if your child is unsure. Range matters more than certainty.
- Look up entry requirements on the university’s own admissions pages, not on aggregator sites.
- Note the assumed prior subjects, which are often listed for A-Level or IB but imply IGCSE choices.
- Take the union of those requirements, not the intersection. Keeping options open is the point.
- Add one subject your child genuinely enjoys. Motivation carries a two-year course further than logic does.

Combinations that close doors
Patterns that cause problems later
- Combined Science with a stated interest in Medicine or Engineering
- No Additional Mathematics with a STEM or Economics target
- Two creative subjects at the expense of a second science or a humanity
- Dropping a language entirely when overseas study is likely
- Ten subjects chosen to look impressive, at the cost of grades in the core five
- Choosing a subject because a friend chose it, which is more common than any parent expects
None of these is fatal on its own. The problem is that each quietly removes options, and the removals are only visible eighteen months later when the university list is being drawn up.
When to decide, and how to change your mind
Most schools ask for subject selections during Form 3, with a short window for changes early in Form 4. Treat that window as real: switching in the first few weeks is usually straightforward, and switching after the first assessment is usually not.
Start the conversation a term before the form arrives. The families who handle this well are the ones who researched two target courses in advance and made the choice calmly, rather than filling in a form the night before it was due.
If your child is genuinely undecided about direction, choose for breadth: English, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, the three separate sciences and one humanity keeps almost every door open. It is a demanding combination, and it is the safest one.
Core and Extended tiers, and why the choice matters
Several IGCSE subjects, Mathematics among them, are offered at two tiers. The Core tier covers less material and caps the highest grade available. The Extended tier covers the full syllabus and allows the top grades. Schools usually decide tier entry late, based on classwork, but families should understand the mechanics early because the ceiling is real.
The trap is entering a capable student at Core to protect against a poor grade. It does protect the grade, and it also caps it below the level many pre-university programmes require. A borderline student is often better supported into Extended than moved down, provided there is time to close the gap.
Ask the school two questions: when tier decisions are made, and what evidence they are based on. If the answer is a single mock result, push for a fuller picture, because one bad paper in October is a weak basis for a decision that shapes the following two years.
Worth knowing: Tier decisions are frequently reversible up to the entry deadline. Ask when that deadline actually falls rather than assuming the school’s first announcement is final.
Where extra support actually changes the outcome
Not every subject benefits equally from tuition. The subjects where structured help reliably moves grades are the cumulative ones, where a gap in October compounds by March. Additional Mathematics is the clearest example, followed by Physics and Chemistry, where each topic assumes fluency in the one before it.
Subjects assessed largely on written argument, such as History or Literature, respond differently. Progress there comes from feedback on written work rather than from more content, so the useful support is somebody marking essays properly and explaining the mark scheme, not another two hours of teaching.
Time the support to the syllabus rather than to the exam. Starting in Form 4, when the foundation topics are being laid, produces far better results than starting in Form 5 when the aim has narrowed to damage limitation. One final point that applies to every subject on the list. A student who has chosen their own combination, understanding why, works differently from one who was assigned it. Involve your child in the decision even where you are fairly sure what the answer should be.
